March 3, 2008 - Paul Maurice was born on January 30, 1967 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. In 2006, Maurice accepted the role as the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs professional hockey team in the NHL. He currently still has the job.
Prior to coaching, Maurice participated in the Ontario Hockey League as a defenseman on the Windsor Spitfires. During one of the games, Maurice was hit in the eye by a flying puck and to this day, still suffers a blind spot and slight fuzziness on the right side of his vision. Eventually, the St. Louis Blues sent down their goalie, Pat Jablonski, to the team. Maurice was then offered a choice of being traded or take a coaching position. Maurice chose to become the Detroit Junior Red Wings head coach from 1993 to 1995. His effort and dedication to the Red Wings led to the J. Ross Robertson Cup and a second place finish at the Memorial Cup in 1995.
That same year, Maurice was offered the head coach position at the Hartford Whalers, now known as the Carolina Hurricanes. At age 28, he was one of the youngest active hockey coaches at the time. One of his more exciting moments came during the 2001 - 2002 NHL season when the Hurricanes earned a spot in the Stanley Cup finals. Unfortunately, they lost to the Detroit Red Wings. In 2003, Maurice was let go. Despite a few key losses and poor seasons, Maurice had led the Hurricanes to four consecutive winning seasons dating from 1998 to 2002.
